Avril Lavigne just released a cover of Alanis Morissette’s 1995 song Ironic, for the soundtrack of Chandler Levack’s new film Mile End Kicks.
The film follows Grace Channing (played by Barbie Ferreira), an emerging music writer who moves to Montreal to write a book about Morissette’s 1995 era-defining album Jagged Little Pill.
Lavigne’s take on the song appears on the film’s official soundtrack, released on Sumerian Records. She stays true to the ebbs and flows of the original, with simple guitar and a subdued delivery leading into the belted-out chorus and jammy guitars.

It’s not the first time Lavigne has shown her love for the enduring hit song. In 2005, she performed the song with Morissette, during the encore of Morissette’s set at the House of Blues in Los Angeles.
Mile End Kicks is set in 2011, during Montreal’s indie rock boom, and also features original music by local band Tops, and a live performance by Islands.
