A 40-year-old Brampton man faces multiple charges including probation offences after being accused of stealing hurricane relief supplies that were headed to Jamaica.

Peel Regional Police say investigators with the Commercial Auto Crime Bureau began an intensive probe after a person broke into a secured storage facility near Derry Rd. E. and Goreway Dr. in Mississauga shortly after 5 a.m. on Dec. 3, 2025.

According to police, the thief hitched a trailer with a shipping container to a transport truck and drove away.

Police said the container housed thousands of dollars in relief supplies such as clothing and non-perishable goods that were awaiting shipment to Jamaica after the Caribbean island was devastated by Hurricane Melissa last fall.

Investigators identified a suspect who police said is currently on probation for similar offences and has been prohibited from driving indefinitely, police said.

Police said officers executed a search warrant at a home in Brampton on March 11 and arrested the suspect.

On Thursday, police announced Varinder Dhillon was charged with one count of break and enter and commit an indictable offence, two counts each of theft over $5,000 and operation while prohibited, three counts each of possession of property obtained by crime, breach of probation and failing to comply with a release order.

Property recovered and returned

Cops said more than $1-million worth of allegedly stolen property was recovered and returned to its rightful owner and shipped to Kingston, Jamaica, where it was to be dispersed.
