Drivers across the Golden Horseshoe, including Toronto, Mississauga and Brampton, are waking up to a rough start as two separate weather warnings combine to create challenging conditions through the morning and into the afternoon.

Environment officials say dense fog has developed in parts of the region early this morning, with near zero visibility reported in some areas.

The sudden drop in visibility is expected to make travel hazardous, especially during the morning rush. Motorists are being warned that visibility could change quickly and without warning, increasing the risk of collisions on highways and local roads.

Drivers are urged to slow down, use headlights and leave extra space between vehicles as conditions can shift rapidly.

As the fog begins to lift, a second system moving across southern Ontario is bringing steady rainfall, with totals between 10 and 20 mm expected from this morning through the afternoon.

The rain is associated with a cold front sweeping through the region, along with the risk of isolated thunderstorms.

Because the ground is already saturated from recent rainfall, even moderate rainfall could lead to localized flooding. Water pooling on roads and in low-lying areas is expected, especially in urban centres.

Officials are reminding drivers to never attempt to drive through flooded roadways and to avoid areas known for poor drainage.

The combination of fog early and rain later means a slow and potentially dangerous commute both this morning and into the evening, with conditions changing throughout the day.

Residents across southern Ontario are advised to stay alert and monitor updates as conditions evolve.
