Whittaker vs Suarez live results and reactions
Ben Whittaker def. Braian Suarez by knockout in round 1. Today’s makeshift main event didn’t turn out to be much. Whittaker (11-0-1, 8 KO) did the job in front of him and put Suarez (21-5, 20 KO) away in the first round, just as Albert Ramirez did back in 2022. Suarez has now been stopped four times in his five losses, and that KO percentage has come from low-level wins. It is what it is, but maybe don’t get TOO far ahead of things with Whittaker based off of this win. BoxRec had Suarez ranked No. 91 in the world at light heavyweight. Suarez and his corner complained about the final shot being a rabbit punch, and they weren’t saying it for no reason. It did land toward the back of the head.
Molly McCann def. Ashleigh Johnson on points. Referee Mark Lyson had it 78-74 for the hometown hero, “Meatball” Molly, who got an extravagant concert entrance that was unlike anything the sport has ever seen for an eight-round fight featuring an opponent with a .500 record. It was a decent scrap, very lively crowd, McCann is working hard and says she hopes to win a British title by the end of 2026, which could happen, the domestic scenes in women’s boxing are pretty shallow.
Joe McGrail def. Aaron Hayden by KO in round 5. McGrail (13-0, 6 KO) was just too good, and won a belt in the process. It’s just an Area title — Central Area super bantamweight title, to be precise — but it’s meaningful for him. Hayden (10-1, 2 KO) gave this a real effort but he was out of his depth, McGrail just too skilled, too good, too well-schooled, too strong, and he busted Hayden up, dropped him, and Hayden took the 10-count.
Leo Atang def. Viktar Chvarkou on points. Referee Steve Gray scored it 59-54 for Atang, who was deducted a point in the fourth round for rabbit punches. The 19-year-old Atang goes the distance for the first time in this one, improving to 6-0 (5 KO). He’s still learning on the job, still very young, this is not a bad thing, this is a learning experience. Chvarkou (6-33, 3 KO) has the awful win-loss record but knows what he’s doing in four-to-eight round fights, knows how to muck it up, and he did that. Young fighters need to learn to deal with that, and Atang got some lessons to take from the fight. It’s valuable work.
