The Surrey Vaisakhi parade drew an estimated 450,000 attendees to celebrate the Sikh harvest festival. The event prominently featured the blue and yellow flag of Khalistan to mark the movement’s 40th anniversary and honour the assassinated activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. As the CBC’s Troy Charles shows us, beyond the traditional showcase of Sikh customs like serving free food, the festival provided a day of unity for the South Asian community dealing with an ongoing extortion crisis.
