Edwardsville relied on depth across the lineup to defend its title at the 41st Hilltopper Invitational on April 18 at Glenbard West.

The Tigers won the No. 2 singles flight and swept all three doubles flights to finish with 27 points.

Glenbard West (18) was second and Glenbard South (12) was third in the eight-team tournament that featured two flights of singles and three flights of doubles.

The Tigers improved on last season’s title performance, when they scored 21 points with a first-place finish at No. 1 doubles and a runner-up performance at No. 1 singles.

Brandon Wong led the singles effort, going 3-0 to win the No. 2 flight.

After finishing second a year ago, Wong defeated Wheaton Warrenville South’s Michael Medanic 6-2, 6-1, Glenbard East’s Arnav Mehta 6-2, 6-3 and Glenbard South’s David Kiss 6-3, 6-1.

At No. 1 singles, Jake Brinker went 2-1 to place third. He beat Wheaton Warrenville South’s Michael Hauenstein 6-2, 6-1 and Palatine’s Justin Chen 6-0, 6-0 with his lone loss to Glenbard East’s Finn Talbot 6-0, 5-7, 10-5.

Edwardsville controlled doubles.

At No. 1 doubles, Isaac Chleboun and Schaefer Bates went 3-0 to win the flight. They defeated Downers Grove South’s Koko Dimitrakakos and Ryan Roumenov 7-6 (5), 6-3, Wheaton Warrenville South’s Jack Landin and Angel Salcido 6-0, 6-2 and Glenbard East’s Evan Fine and Dean Piticavong 6-1, 6-0.

Bates won his second straight Hilltopper title after capturing No. 1 doubles last season with Jesse Hattrup.

At No. 2 doubles, John Almos and Lucas Rudd also went 3-0. They beat Glenbard West’s Nick Harding and Duncan Rowley 6-2, 7-5, Downers Grove South’s Kyle Surina and Sam Wootton 6-2, 6-2 and Sandburg’s Joshua Carandang and Sujal Shah 6-1, 6-0.

Eliot Riechmann and Evan Ousley completed the sweep at No. 3 doubles, going 3-0 with wins over Palatine’s Jeremiah Zhang and Zaiyn Yousuf 6-0, 6-0, Downers Grove South’s Max Tylka and Ethan Vanderlaan 6-3, 6-2 and Glenbard West’s Adler Wanger and MJ Wargin 6-3, 6-2.

Edwardsville returns to action when it hosts O’Fallon in Southwestern Conference play at 3:30 p.m. April 21 inside the EHS Tennis Center.
