WALTHAM, Mass. – The 19th-ranked Brandeis University men’s tennis team edged University Athletic Association rivals #24 New York University, 4-3, in a key match-up for seeding in the upcoming UAA tournament.
TEAM RECORDS
Brandeis: 11-6, ranked #19 in Division III by Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
NYU: 9-4, ranked #24 in DIII by ITA.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Judges overcame dropping the doubles point for the fourth time this season. All three matches were decided by 6-4 scores, with NYU winning at 1 and 3. Brandeis’s win came at #2 from sophomore Aidan Wang-Fan (Richmond Hill, Ont./Bill Crothers Secondary School) and first-year Oliver Lorenz (Albuquerque, N.M./Rafa Nadal Tennis Academy).
The Judges won three of the first four singles matches to take a 3-2 lead.
Junior Pierce Garbett (Coral Gables, Fla./Gulliver Prep) opened with a 6-3, 6-2, win at #2.
Lorenz picked up his second win of the day at #4, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2.
Sophomore Daniel Shemesh (Modiin, Israel/Ironi Hey School Modiin) got Brandeis within a point of victory at #1, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.
NYU staved off defeat with a 6-4, 6-3 win at #3 to start the second round of matches.
Wang-Fan clinched the team victory with a straight-set win at #6, 6-4, 6-3, before NYU won 7-6, 3-6, 10-6, in a third-set super-tiebreaker at #5.
UP NEXT
The Judges and Violets will next travel to Altamonte Springs, Florida, for the 2026 UAA tournament. Seeding for the tournament will be decided later this week.
