NEWS RELEASE
SAULT STE. MARIE REGION CONSERVATION AUTHORITY
*************************
The Sault Ste. Marie Region Conservation Authority (SSMRCA) is upgrading its previously issued flood outlook to a flood watch for rivers and streams throughout the watershed.
This statement is intended to raise awareness of increased flooding potential and associated water safety concerns.
Weather forecasts indicate that moderate rainfall of approximately 25 to 35 millimetres is expected over the next five days. Air temperatures are forecast to fluctuate between -2 C and 18 C, which will accelerate snowmelt and increase runoff across the watershed.
Recent warm temperatures have significantly increased runoff from the dense snowpack. While snowmelt has already begun, a substantial snowpack remains throughout the watershed. Current snowpack water content exceeds 200 mm, which is well above the long-term average. Continued snowmelt, combined with recent rainfall, has resulted in increased flows in major rivers and streams.
As a result of warm temperatures, forecast precipitation, and ongoing snowmelt, high runoff is anticipated in local waterways. Stream flows are currently elevated, and localized flooding may occur, particularly in low‑lying areas, including water pooling on roadways. Flood control channels operated by the SSMRCA are presently functioning within normal operating ranges; however, water levels are expected to rise in response to continued runoff and additional precipitation.
All rivers, streams, and flood control channels will contain cold, fast‑moving water during and following this event. The SSMRCA will continue to closely monitor watershed conditions, including stream levels and flows, and will issue updates as conditions evolve.
Residents and visitors are strongly advised to stay well clear of all waterways and flood control channels. High water levels and slippery conditions create dangerous environments. Extra caution should be taken to ensure that children and pets are kept at a safe distance from these areas.
This flood watch remains in effect until April 20.
