Surrey’s ultimate Sabres rise to #3 in B.C. as disc sport takes off

Guildford Park Sabres are the school ultimate team to beat in Surrey this spring.
Ranked #3 in B.C. and on the rise, the senior Sabres are having a solid season in the co-ed disc sport, winning big games and gelling well prior to provincials at Newton Athletic Park, May 25-26.
“There are a lot of good teams (in Surrey), and on any given day another team can can jump up and surprise you,” cautioned Mike Dumouchelle, award-winning coach and program co-ordinator at Guildford Park.
“We’re pretty good,” he added, humbly. “We have a lot of youth joining us this year and mixing in with our returning seniors. I love how well they work together, the energy. These guys are having a great time. It’s a big family.”
Dumouchelle, one of three B.C. school coaches given a Citation of Excellence by BC School Sports for 2026, helped get ultimate off the ground at Guildford Park two decades ago. The game has since grown with the help of Chris Wakelin (Vortex club) and other Surrey-area backers of the sport, which combines elements of football, soccer and basketball.
“It’s really popular at our school, and this year we’ve grown it to five teams,” Dumouchelle noted. “Other kids see it and want to get involved. We also have a tradition of alumni, like Calvin (Nguyen) and James Verano, who played here and came back to coach now. Shelby (Woods) is coaching one of the junior teams, and Anthony Duong’s also coaching. We constantly have players coming back and helping out. Players get younger siblings into the sport, too.”
On April 10, the Sabres played three other Surrey teams (Holy Cross, Johnston Heights, Surrey Christian) during an afternoon of high-tempo ultimate games at Hjorth Road Park.

Calvin Nguyen, coach of the senior Sabres, said competition is strong to make an ultimate team at Guildford Park and also play game minutes.
“I think it’s really just a love for the game, right?” he said on the sideline as players sang songs and yelled encouragement to those on the field.
“A lot of programs, you’ll have one good year and then things reset and you rebuild. But this school, we get a fresh pool of talent. They play together, keep playing from Grade 8 all the way up. That’s how the talent keeps building here.”
Ultimate is among eight spring sports administered by BC School Sports including track & field, girls soccer, mountain biking, golf, tennis, rugby and badminton.
As for the name, I think “ultimate” is boring and doesn’t accurately describe the sport.
Instead, I propose renaming it disc-o.
Yeah, disc-o.
“I don’t know, I’m a little bit of a traditionalist, just because of how long we’ve been doing this, since the 70s,” Dumouchelle said with a laugh.
Fellow coach Nguyen seemed more receptive to my disc-o renaming pitch.
“That’d be fun,” he said. “I think the older crowd would love that. The younger kids would probably be like, ‘What’s disco?’ I like your name. It’s fun.”
