Winnipeg firefighters were sent to a blaze at a highrise apartment complex Monday afternoon.

Emergency vehicles could be seen around 444 Kennedy St., in the city’s Central Park neighbourhood, at around 3 p.m. The fire started in the early afternoon.

Black smoke marks could be seen coming out of a window in the 142-unit Manitoba Housing property.

The highrise has been a site of gang activity and open drug use over the years.

Manitoba spent $446,000 to give the building a facelift, including safety improvements the government said late last year have decreased police service calls to the building by 60 per cent.

The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service did not respond to a request for comment Monday.
