Brampton author and illustrator Ruth Ohi, whose work is in over 60 children’s books, has been added to the city’s Arts Walk of Fame.

The city officially added Ohi to the Brampton Arts Walk of Fame on Tuesday with an induction ceremony as part of Brampton Book Week celebrations.

“To be recognized like this by the city that I grew up in is an incredible gift and one that I would never have imagined for myself,” Ohi said in a release. “I hope my induction encourages kids to realize that their stories and ideas matter.”

Ohi has authored over 20 books and has illustrated dozens more, with her work published in Korea, China, Belgium, Turkey, Holland, Australia and the United States.

Growing up, Ohi says she enjoyed making weekly trips to the Chinguacousy Brampton Public Library with her family, and thanked her parents for the visits that helped foster an early love of reading and curiosity about the world.

Ohi attended Earnscliffe Public School and Bramalea Secondary School before going to the Ontario College of Art in Toronto.

Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown said Ohi’s made “outstanding contributions to children’s literature and the arts.”

“Her work has inspired countless young people to explore their creativity and embrace storytelling. Through the Arts Walk of Fame, we continue to honour individuals who put Brampton on the map and inspire future generations,” Brown said.

The Brampton Arts Walk of Fame is the highest honour that the city can give to creatives, and honours their outstanding work that has influenced arts and culture on a national to international scale.

Other notable inductees include Brampton songstress Alessia Cara, comedian Russel Peters, poet and author Rupi Kaur, actors Alan Thicke and Michael Cera, and film and video producer Julien Christian Lutz (Director X).
