Between The Lines: Jack Coan could become Saskatchewan’s most popular player

Ask AI to name the most popular Saskatchewan Roughriders player of all time, and the list includes George Reed, Ron Lancaster, Darian Durant, Don Narcisse and Weston Dressler.

But in Saskatchewan, everyone knows the most popular player is usually the backup quarterback.

This season, it appears third-year pivot Jack Coan is in line to move into that role following Jake Maier’s off-season departure.

Starting quarterback Trevor Harris believes Coan has put himself in a strong position heading into training camp.

“He’s one of the guys who gets there five or 10 minutes before I do, and he stays every day as we grind the tape,” Harris said. “He’s one of the very few guys I trust with a project during the week because I know the information he gives me is going to check out. We see the game the same way.

“If he has the training camp he believes he can have, he’s got a great opportunity to win the number two job.”
