Former world champion Mark Magsayo is embracing a new era in boxing, trading the traditional multi-belt system for the high-stakes landscape of Zuffa Boxing.

The appeal, according to Magsayo, comes from the clarity of the rankings, unlike in conventional boxing where four major sanctioning bodies (WBA, WBC, IBF, and WBO) each crown their own world champions.

While many modern stars chase undisputed status by collecting all four belts, the Filipino contender is drawn to the idea of a single, definitive hierarchy.

“The difference is, there’s only one ranking,” Magsayo explained in an exclusive interview with GMA News Online. “For example, I’m fighting at 135 pounds. There’s only one ranking. There’s only one world champion, just like in the UFC.”

Looking ahead, the Tagbilaran native has no plans of slowing down. Though Zuffa Boxing’s official lightweight rankings have not yet been established, his goal is to be the name at the very top once they are released.

“I want to fight at least three fights this year. I want to win. The 135-pound rankings haven’t started yet. When they do, I want to be at the top,” he said.

When asked if he can squeeze in two more fights this year to meet his lofty goal, the former WBC world featherweight champion expressed confidence in his conditioning and preparation.

“I can do it,” Magsayo said with conviction. “I’ve prepared for my fights this year. At least three fights. Maybe in August and then in December.”
