Police have released photos of a wanted 53-year-old Montreal man after they said a security guard was shot inside Fairview Mall Tuesday morning during a jewelry store robbery.

Kyle Douglas Prouse is being hunted by Toronto Police, who said in an update on Tuesday afternoon that he is also allegedly connected to an August 2023 break-and-enter investigation in Durham Region.

Police said he has ties to Toronto and Vancouver as well.

Police said officers responded to a report of a shooting at the North York mall at Don Mills Rd. and Sheppard Ave. E., at 10:05 a.m.
Authorities said officers found the victim, who was shot in the torso, outside the Michael Hill jewelry store.
The male suspect stole a quantity of jewelry, police said, and they believe he acted alone. The individual fled in a white, construction-style van before officers arrived and was last seen heading southbound on Don Mills Rd.

They later said that the vehicle had been recovered in the Shaughnessy-George Henry Blvd. area of North York, about a kilometre away from Fairview Mall, and that the suspect then fled in a black Honda Accord.

They originally said the suspect was a white male between 5-foot-6 and 6-foot who was wearing a grey hoodie and pants, a blue baseball cap and a white medical mask. They later added that he also had black shoes and flecks of white paint on his clothing.

The victim was transported to hospital in life-threatening condition via an emergency run, but is now listed in stable condition, police said.
“It appears the suspect attended the mall just before opening with the intent on robbing a jewelry store,” Insp. Kristy Smith told reporters outside the mall.
“As the suspect was fleeing, he was confronted by a member of the mall’s security team. During that interaction, the security guard was shot.”
It’s the same jewelry shop that has been the scene of past smash-and-grab thefts, the latest occurring in October 2025.
“We understand how concerning this is,” Smith said. “An incident like this has effects for the community.”
Smith added that there will be an increased police presence in the area in the days ahead as members from the holdup squad investigate the shooting.

“Our thoughts are with the victim, who is a member of the mall security team and works closely with our officers on a regular basis,” Smith said, adding there is a community hub inside the mall that is staffed with officers who regularly patrol it.

Tuesday’s mall shooting was one of several that have occurred in the GTA in recent months.
On Feb. 9, police in Halton Region said Omer Niaz Muhammad, 24, was gunned down in the parking lot of Burlington Centre.
Two days earlier, Toronto Police said Chandan Kumar Raja Nandakuma, 37, was shot dead while sitting inside his vehicle near the entrance to Woodbine Mall.
On Jan. 6, a man was fatally shot at the GO bus terminal outside Yorkdale Mall. Police said the suspect was arrested inside the mall.
