Playing Styles & Prediction
Boulter is Britain’s sole WTA representative in Madrid this year, and opens her campaign against Townsend – with a consistent head-to-head lead over the American. But this will be their first outing on clay, which continues to be a surface that Boulter is improving on.
Townsend so far has just played four tournaments, reaching the final in Austin in March. Boulter has been a lot more active, although her year continues to be a little up-and-down. She did win the title in Ostrava but although she reached the quarter-final in Rouen, she lost to Veronika P{odrez very handily. Townsend has a far better record on clay than Boulter, so perhaps marginally has the edge in this encounter.
Prediction: Boulter in three sets.
