A significant sinkhole has shut down an Elmwood-area street.

The large hole popped up Wednesday morning on Washington Avenue between Roch Street and Watt Street.

City crews were called to the scene shortly after it was discovered and have cordoned off the area while they assess the damage and determine what caused the ground to give way.

Motorists are encouraged to avoid the area and find another route.

There is no word as to when the roadway is expected to reopen.
