The Patriots could use some depth at running back, so they took the first step in addressing that on Monday.

New England hosted Shane Watts, according to ESPN’s Mike Reiss. He was one of the top running backs in Division II football at Fort Hays State.

In July, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football league announced they signed Watts.

During his 2024 collegiate season, Watts rushed for 1,303 yards with 13 touchdowns, and 449 receiving yards with four touchdowns.

The Patriots are looking at external options after becoming thin at the running back position internally. Rhamondre Stevenson hasn’t returned to practice since Friday’s preseason opener against the Washington Commanders. It’s unclear if the veteran running back is injured.

Lan Larison was placed on injured reserve after he broke his foot against Washington, Terrell Jennings left Monday’s practice early and Deneric Prince — who the Patriots recently signed — didn’t practice Monday.

It’s unclear if Watts will sign with the Patriots.
