Mississauga residents might get a bit of a financial break this year as the city is considering a temporary pause of all property tax late penalty and interest fees for taxpayers.

A motion coming to city council next Wednesday points out that with residents facing “rising costs of living, inflation and economic uncertainty,” some financial relief — even if temporary — would “help stabilize households and local businesses, and support local economic activity.”

The motion, brought forth by Ward 2 Coun. Alvin Tedjo and seconded by Ward 11’s Brad Butt, asks that City of Mississauga senior staff be directed to introduce a three-month pause that would be in effect from July 2 until Oct. 2.

City council is being asked to support the motion in consideration of the following:

The current global economic downturn has been driven by escalating geopolitical conflict in the Middle East, surging energy prices and persistent inflation.
Residents of Mississauga are experiencing a period of fiscal strain due to rising costs of living, inflation and economic uncertainty.
The government of Canada is temporarily suspending the federal fuel excise tax until Labour Day to reduce the cost of living and business operations for Canadians.
Property taxes levied on Mississauga residents have increased by 9.2 per cent in 2025 and 5.2 per cent in 2026 and represent “a significant burden on businesses and homeowners.”
Mississauga has recently experienced stronger-than-anticipated revenues in penalties and interest due to property owners being unable to pay their property taxes on time.
In 2025, Mississauga collected $25 million in those penalties and interest, an increase of $12.8 million more than anticipated.
During COVID-19, Mississauga had a temporary pause of late fees that allowed property owners to apply for relief, and Toronto continues this program today.
