Calgary fire crews managed to contain a two-alarm fire in southeast Calgary to a single home despite 80km/h winds on Friday morning.
No injuries were reported in the fire, which broke out on the 0-100 block of Mahogany Square SE shortly after 11 a.m. Fire crews reported heavy smoke and visible flames when they arrived, but were able to prevent the fire from spreading to neighbouring homes.
“Firefighters stretched multiple hand lines and began applying water to knock back the fire while ladder trucks prepared to set up water towers,” the Calgary Fire Department said in a Friday afternoon statement.
“Two water towers were set up and used in combination with hose lines to extinguish the fire that had burned through the roof of the source home.”
No occupants were present at the source home, and fire crews evacuated neighbouring homes as a precaution, though all nearby homes were able to re-occupy after the fire was extinguished.
Calgary police, EMS, ATCO gas and Enmax all attended the scene, and utilities were shut off to the source home.
The origin and cause of the fire is being investigated, and crews remain on scene to ensure the fire does not re-ignite.
