Survivor 50’s Christian Hubicki—whose exit from the show was not exactly caused by Jimmy Fallon’s One in the Urn twist so much as it was—still got an apology from the houseplant who hosts The Tonight Show.
While the apology is making headlines, it was two other things Fallon said that were much more surprising/appalling. (Watch the whole segment below.)
Thursday night, Christian appeared on NBC’s The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon + Johnny Carson Rolling in his Grave. “Christian, I am so sorry,” Jimmy said. “It wasn’t supposed to be like this. It wasn’t supposed to be you.”
So, he’s not really sorry for the dumb twist as he is that Christian was its victim. But also: Jimmy said that it wasn’t actually his idea! Here we go:
I talked to Jeff, and I have all these crazy ideas for Survivor. I’m a big fan of the show. So I come up with these ideas, and he calls me back.
And they have great producers on the show, and they go, Here’s this idea that we have. And I go, Oh, I love this, this is perfect. Great.
So Survivor’s producers pitched this idea to him and he agreed? I guess that shouldn’t be surprising because that’s exactly what happened with The Billie Eilish Boomerang Idol: “We sent her a couple of ideas, and she decided which one she liked,” Probst said. “[W]e kind of wrote out the clue, and she approved that as well.”
Looks like Survivor 50 was in the hands of the producers all along. But the Fallon Fucks with the Fundamentals twist has its own twist.
Christian said that, when he was voting, he realized, “all my frustrations, I can take out in the best way possible: on a celebrity 8,000 miles away. So, I did a whole five-minute set with jokes about, you know, my distaste for the advantage.”
That’s when Jimmy Fallon revealed Probst asked his permission to put that in the episode:
Jeff called me, actually, as they were editing the episode, and he was like, Hey, Christian says a bunch of funny stuff, but I don’t know. Do you care if we leave it in?
I go, Leave it all in. You have to give the guy something.
Props to Fallon for saying yes to being mocked. But I didn’t think Survivor 50: In the Hands of the Fans would mean putting the editorial of a CBS reality show in the hands of an NBC celebrity. These rich white guys are always going to protect each other, aren’t they?
