There’s no shortage of former college and professional sports players on NASCAR pit crews, as the physicality and team-oriented nature of their sports play into the systems they were taught during their decade of schooling and time in the pros.
On Saturday afternoon, Jason Kelce, an unexpected former athlete-turned pit crew member, took the baton for Hendrick Motorsports’ No. 17 team. Kelce was given the job of sign holder to help Corey Day find his way to the pits at Talladega Superspeedway.

Kelce retired from the NFL following the 2024 season, with 5 Pro Bowl appearances and one Super Bowl win.
Day was finally rewarded with his first O’Reilly Auto Parts Series win when we survived a three-wide battle with Sam Mayer and Sheldon Creed, ultimately beating Brent Crews and Creed to the line.
Post race, when asked by Mamba Smith what he was doing after his first NASCAR win, akin to the quintessential post-Super Bowl question. Kelce, along with the pit crew, replied that he’s going to the Boulevard (instead of Disneyland.)
