Cherry blossoms in Toronto’s High Park are now in the final stages before peak bloom.
“The fluffy white petals of Sakura blossoms are slowly beginning to show, with a few beginning to open,” according to the High Park Nature Centre. “We anticipate peak bloom in High Park to occur Friday, May 1, 2026.”
Early predictions indicated Ontario cherry blossoms were on track for a typical timeline for peak bloom — which appears to be coming to fruition.
Last year, cherry blossoms in High Park reached peak bloom on May 3 — so they’re tracking just slightly ahead of last year but within the normal bloom window.
The Royal Botanical Gardens (RBG), Canada’s largest botanical garden straddling Hamilton and Burlington, suspected peak bloom may be tracking slightly ahead of last year, which came to fruition.
First open blossom spotted in High Park today! It was a quick visit just to check on the progress, and despite the rain, I was able to spot one of the first open blossoms in the park.
How will the cool spring influence the timing of peak bloom?
Jon Peter, the Royal Botanical Gardens (RBG) director of horticulture, said earlier in the spring he didn’t anticipate the cool spring to delay blooming past typical peak windows.
“Cherry trees are highly responsive to temperature patterns, and extended periods of cold weather can slow the accumulation of the ‘heat units’ they need to break dormancy,” Peter explained.
Bloom timing can shift quickly
“Stretches of warm, sunny weather can accelerate development, while additional cold snaps may cause short-term delays,” he said.
Using recorded temperatures through March 25, along with current forecasts and historical averages through the end of April, Peter said bloom development at RBG is tracking slightly ahead of 2025, but behind the warmer springs of 2023 and 2024.
In 2023, peak bloom occurred at RBG on April 17, April 19 in 2024, and closer to April 28 in 2025, which was later than previous years due to slow bud development with sustained colder temperatures.
What about the cherry blossoms in High Park?
On Tuesday, April 28, cherry blossoms in High Park were at Stage 5 of development.
At that stage, blooms are fluffy and white. This stage occurs about four to six days before peak bloom.
When do Ontario cherry blossoms usually reach peak bloom?
Sometimes only lasting for a couple of days, peak bloom typically occurs between late April and early May. The exact timing is environment and weather dependant.
Predicting the exact time of peak bloom can be difficult and relies on an accumulation of days with above-freezing temperatures, explained Peter, in an interview ahead of cherry blossom season last year.
Many environmental factors go into flowering, including day length, days above freezing, soil temperatures, light exposure, soil moisture, nutrition and wind. These factors effect how long the flowers stay around.
