Q. Why this story?
A. This story and these characters have been in my head since I was in my teens. While I’ve written short stories, poems, essays, and songs, this novel has by far been the nearest and dearest to my heart. I’ve been eager to share it with others for decades. You could say it’s been my life’s work.

Q. Where do you get your ideas?
A. My inspiration comes from a blend of pop culture, dreams, and the human experience. My characters are far more important than the story itself. I have a kind of relationship with them in my mind, as I have gotten to develop and know them over the years. I ask myself what types of situations I’d like to see them in and go from there.
Q. Why now?
A. Publishing the novel was a personal goal that I had put off for too long. It sat 90 per cent completed for years. I recently turned 50 and knew if I was ever going to share this story with others, it was now or never
Q. Are you planning on writing a sequel?
A. Yes. In fact, I have already begun writing the outline for the sequel and have been jotting down ideas for it for several years already.

Q. Who are your favourite writers?
A. My biggest influences in the fantasy genre are Margaret Write and Tracy Hickman, Robert E. Howard, J. R. R. Tolkien, and George R. R. Martin. In the realm of horror, I would say Bram Stoker, Edgar Allan Poe, H. P. Lovecraft, and Stephen King.
Q. Why did you choose to self-publish?
A. I was only able to find a handful of literary agents in Canada who represent authors of dark fantasy, and of those, only a couple were accepting new clients. I only received a response from one, and she unfortunately turned me down.
With the relative ease of self-publishing, I realized that it would be simpler to put my story out there myself. If that were to eventually get the attention of a traditional publisher or agent, great! If not, at least I’d know that I had left something behind as a legacy after my time on Earth is done.

Synopsis
The last thing Jylen, a rogue who conducted stealth missions for the king, wanted was to suffer a crisis of conscience. Tasked with putting an end to the attacks on the city of Shadas, he had gathered a ragtag band of colourful characters from around the world and set out on his mission, only to discover that he might have erred in judgment and found himself on the wrong side of history.
With their world threatened by the terrifying machinations of a secretive society dating back thousands of years, he and his party must now uncover who the real enemy is and how to stop them. No easy task, especially for Jylen, haunted by mistakes both past and recent as he struggles to find a sense of purpose and worth. And then there is Rosepin, the strong and compassionate nordswoman who unexpectedly stole his heart and cracked his veneer from the moment they met.
The added complications of love, loss, and guilt only compound Jylen’s struggle. He must now unravel his tangled thoughts and emotions, confront his unconscious biases, and find a path to redemption.
