Calgary police say two children were found deceased inside a vehicle in northwest Calgary on Thursday morning.
In a news release, Calgary Police Service said officers received a phone call just after 10 a.m. on Thursday, April 30, that led them to the 4300 block of 14 Street N.W.
Police said officers located a vehicle and found two deceased children inside.
During a Thursday media availability, police said both children are believed to be under the age of 10.
“At this time, the deaths are believed to be suspicious and our Homicide Unit is investigating,” police said in the release.
Police said one person is in custody and there is no further risk to the public.
During the media availability, police said the person in custody is male. The vehicle was stopped when officers approached, police said.
The medical examiner was on scene and would determine the cause of death, police said during the media availability.
Police said 14 Street N.W. was shut down in both directions to protect the integrity of the investigation.
Investigators were working to identify the children, find potential witnesses and speak with anyone who may have knowledge of what happened, police said during the media availability.
“We understand this incident is deeply upsetting, and will greatly impact the families and loved ones of the children, their communities and our entire city,” police said.
Calgary police said the Victim Assistance Support Team is a free service offered to victims and witnesses of crime or tragedy.
“If you or if someone you know is in need of support, the Victim Assistance Support Team (VAST) is here to help,” police said.
