May Day celebrations aren’t just about welcoming back the sun with maypole dances, though we advising dancing at every opportunity, especially at the halfway point between the spring equinox and the summer solstice.
May 1 is also International Workers’ Day, when we shine a light on the working class (that’s you and me). In Quebec, May Day is traditionally marked with a rise in the minimum wage.
As of Friday, Quebec workers will be entitled to a minimum pay of $16.60 per hour — a 3.1-per-cent increase from the previous $16.10 baseline. For tip earners, the minimum wage will be set at $13.30 per hour. Is it enough? That remains to be seen.
The sun will be out to celebrate with us, blasting a high of 13 C with a UV index of 5, or moderate. That’s two degrees below the average for May 1. Overnight, expect a low of plus-2 C with a chance of showers.
