Surrey man sentenced to one day in jail after sexual assault conviction

A Surrey man convicted of sexual assault outside a coffee shop and thrift store in Newton in August 2024 will spend only one more day in jail after the court took into account his time in pre-sentence custody.
Abdulkarim Ahmad Alhamid was charged with sexual assault on Aug. 8, 2025. He pleaded guilty on April 8, 2026, to one count of sexual assault and was sentenced on Thursday (April 30) at Surrey provincial court.
He was sentenced to four months in jail but was credited with 119 days for time spent in pre-sentence custody, and as a result, he had only one day left to serve, Ann Seymour, acting communications counsel for the BC Prosecution Service, said.
Surrey Police Service stated in an August 2025 news release that the incident occurred on August 5, 2025, at 12:15 p.m., at Scott Road Centre, outside Tim Hortons (8080 120 St.), and again outside the Salvation Army Thrift Store (8066 120 St.). The two businesses are located nearby in the same parking lot of Scott Road Centre.
In addition to one day in jail, Alhamid was given a two-year probation order with conditions, including a DNA order, a lifetime weapons and firearms ban, and a $200 victim surcharge due by April 30, 2027. He also has to comply the sex offender information registration act for 10 years.
