The province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) says it is investigating after a stabbing suspect in Toronto died from a fall from an apartment balcony.
Toronto police said the 52-year-old man was suspected of stabbing another person at an apartment building Friday and attempted to flee the scene, before falling.
Ashley Visser, spokesperson with Toronto police, said officers were called about a stabbing at a building in the city’s east end near Bleecker Street and St. James Avenue at around 11:00 a.m.
Visser said police located a male who had been stabbed and while they were tending to the victim, they were notified that the man accused in the stabbing was trying to escape.
The SIU said police had a conversation with the man through the door of an apartment unit. A short time later, they learned he had fallen from a balcony and died.
Three investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case. Anyone with information about the investigation is asked to contact the investigations unit.
The SIU investigates whenever police are involved in incidents resulting in death or serious injury.
