Surrey police warn about scams related to the Cloverdale Rodeo

The Surrey Police Service sent out a warning on X.com May 1 about scams surrounding the Cloverdale Rodeo.
“We’ve received reports of individuals being scammed in relation to vendor applications for the Cloverdale Rodeo,” the post on X.com revealed. “Please note that all vendor applications have been filled. Please do not respond or transfer money by a social media or email links.”
Kathy Shepherd, Cloverdale Rodeo and Exhibition Association (CREA) president, said they’ve been working with the SPS for several weeks in an attempt to stop a number of related scams.
“Our vendor spots are all full,” Sheppard said. “Everything official, everything that comes from us will have an official Cloverdale Rodeo email address.”
She said most of the scams have been on social media, soliciting vendor applications, and there’s also been ticket scams. She added, if something feels wrong it likely is.
“If you’re ever feeling pressure to pay, or if they’re asking you to pay in a specific way, you know that’s not right. Everything comes through the Cloverdale Rodeo and will have an official email address.”
Sheppard added scammers have also been creating bots in an attempt to sell fraudulent tickets online.
“You have to be very vigilant. Make sure you’re using an official site.”
She said all tickets for the rodeo and fair can be found via links on cloverdalerodeo.com.
“Just make sure that the website you’re on is the right website and make sure you’re on the right social media pages.”
She said CREA only has one social media channel per social media platform—one on Facebook, one on X, one on Instagram, etc.—not multiple channels per platform.
She urged potential rodeo- and fair-goers to find CREA’s official social channel before choosing to follow links to a ticket site.
“We’re working hard with the SPS in attempt to stop it, but unfortunately it’s happening everywhere,” Sheppard revealed. “We’ve been in communication with other fairs and big events and it’s happening to them too, and it’s unfortunate.
“So we just ask everyone to be careful when buying tickets.”
