Five NFL teams unveiled new or updated uniforms this spring, including the Atlanta Falcons, Baltimore Ravens, Los Angeles Rams, Tennessee Titans and Washington Commanders, which left us wondering how many other teams are in desperate need of a redesign.
With that, we’ve identified five teams that we’d like to see unveil a new uniform design for the 2027. The list won’t include teams that have undergone changes within the last few seasons, as they’re only permitted on a five-year cycle.
The Giants exist in an interesting place, as their current uniforms – which were introduced in 2005 – are heavily influenced by their 1956 championship team and evoke a throwback feel that many (including myself) clamor for.
But after they introduced their Color Rush uniforms in 2016 and subsequently added their 1980-99 home throwback uniforms in 2022 – complete with navy blue helmets – many fans are calling for that look to return on a full-time basis.
That said, we think there’s a middle ground that can make everyone happy, which would be to introduce a new set inspired by their 1966-74 uniforms – where navy blue and white are at the forefront and red takes a back seat.
The home uniforms wouldn’t be that different from what they wear now, but they would include a deeper shade of blue on the helmets, jerseys and white pants, which would have a simplified blue-red-blue striping pattern.
Those stripes would be carried over to the cuffs of the white road jerseys, much like their current Color Rush set. But instead of blue numbers outlined in red, they’d feature solid blue numbers – and we’d drop the collar design, too.
The navy blue helmets would be the only shell in the Giants’ rotation, though they would have the option of switching back and forth between the lowercase “NY” and underlined “GIANTS” wordmark. They could also alternate gray and white facemasks.
The uniforms would be complete with dark navy blue socks, though alternate options could include gray pants, which they wore from 1940-65 and 2000-21, including somewhat recent victories in Super Bowl XLII and XLVI.
There might eventually be calls for a red alternate jersey to be added to the rotation – after all, the color was a prominent part of their 100th season throwback design and they had one from 2004-07 – but we’d like to see them resist the urge.
That is unless they wanted to channel Ole Miss and create two separate identities within the same set, including another white road jersey with red numbers. Maybe we should shut up before we give them and Nike any ideas…
That said, there’s one additional change we would like to see for the 2027 season, which involves a team removing a color from its palette to simplify its look and align with another franchise it shares a city with, stay tuned as we close this five-part series tomorrow.
