Keep off the grass.

That’s the clear message — at least for now — City of Mississauga officials are delivering to residents as they continue to get soccer and football fields ready for spring and summer action.

While the city’s baseball diamonds are ready to go, with the lit facilities opening this past weekend and unlit diamonds scheduled to open today, patience is needed prior to running onto other sports fields, the city said on Monday.

“We’re currently in the process of preparing our outdoor soccer and football fields for the new season,” the city said in an online notice to residents. “We ask for your cooperation in avoiding use during early spring so they’re in top shape for the rest of the season.”

The athletic fields aren’t quite ready yet to welcome the spring and summer sports action, according to city officials. A large snowpack from this past winter that has melted in addition to recent bouts of heavy rain have saturated grass sports fields, and the soccer and football facilities need time to recover.

While some fields have already opened for the 2026 spring/summer season, such as those that host bocce and beach volleyball matches in addition to baseball diamonds, many others won’t open for play until later this week or early next week.

Opening and closing dates for Mississauga outdoor sports fields are as follows:

Baseball diamonds will open for play on May 1 (lit diamonds) and May 4 (unlit diamonds), and close for the season on Oct. 4.
Football fields will open on May 11 (unlit fields) and May 25 (lit fields), and close for the year on Nov. 1.
Soccer pitches will open on May 8 (unlit pitches) and May 19 (lit pitches), and close for the season on Oct. 4.
Cricket pitches will open on May 1 (unlit pitches), and close for the season on Oct. 4.
Artificial turf facilities will open and close for the season on dates yet to be determined (pending weather conditions).
Bocce and beach volleyball (opened for play March 23) will close for the season on Oct. 4.
