U.S. Olympic sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson broke her silence about her July 27 arrest at the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport stemming from a domestic violence incident with her boyfriend, fellow sprinter Christian Coleman.

Richardson, 25, posted a message via her Instagram story Monday evening, saying she spent time in “self-reflection,” is “holding herself accountable” for her actions and understands that she “put herself in a compromised situation with someone that she has deep care and appreciation for.”

“I’m taking this time to not only see myself but get myself a certain level of help that overall is going to reflect who I truly am in my heart, in my spirit, and accept this moment to be more,” Richardson said. “My only thing is I want to be more, not just for myself but for my family, for my fans. I overly appreciate you guys supporting me and showing up and even holding me accountable to being my best self.

“More than anything, I refuse to run away but face everything that comes to me head-on because everything on the other side is greater, but you gotta go through in order to get there,” Richardson added.

Richardson was arrested and later taken into custody for just shy of 19 hours at the SCORE South Correctional Entity after repeatedly shoving Coleman during a “heated” argument as they went through TSA security, according to a police report obtained by The Athletic.

The arresting officer witnessed Richardson shove Coleman multiple times as Coleman walked away from Richardson — footage caught on security camera — and deemed it enough probable cause to arrest Richardson. The offense was listed as a fourth-degree domestic violence assault, but Coleman, 29, defended her and refused to press charges, instead offering support after the United States Track and Field event in Eugene, Ore. The case was later cleared.

“I feel like it was just a sucky situation all around,” Coleman, 29, said on Aug. 3. “I don’t feel as if she should have been arrested.”

Richardson withdrew from the event, her first 200-meter race of the season, after news of her arrest broke. As the reigning world champion, she has an automatic bid for next month’s world championships in Tokyo.
