Training camps across the Canadian Football League will be opening this week as teams build their rosters for the 2026 season.
Saskatchewan Roughriders rookie camp opens tomorrow at Griffiths Stadium on the University of Saskatchewan campus. There will be a lot going on on the field and in the meeting rooms. Riders’ Plaza of Honour quarterback Darian Durant knows firsthand that there is also a lot to deal with away from the field.
“It was my first time really getting paid. I mean budgeting. I started on the practice roster. So now you’re not getting paid much, but you have to live on your own. This is your first taste of growing into an adult. Then you have to keep in the back of your mind that everyone wants to play. You have to understand the business part of the game as well. These are veteran guys. They won Grey Cups. You have to wait your turn, and you never wish injury on anyone. That’s part of the game as well. So you have to keep yourself ready to play, even though you’re not playing. So that means preparing, lifting weights, working out, and especially getting into the playbook each and every week to understand game plans, because you’re a hit or two away from being on the field. So it definitely made me mature very fast.”
