NASCAR officials conduct thorough Watkins Glen track inspection

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (WETM) — NASCAR drivers are getting ready for the races at Watkins Glen International. But first, NASCAR officials need to inspect every foot of the track.

NASCAR will be racing at W.G.I from May 8 thought May 10. And NASCAR officials said track inspections are very important.

“Driver safety is the very top of our list and doing the inspections basically all week long just to make sure the track is ready and prepared and safe and ready to go for the race,” said Joe Green, the Senior Director of Facilities and Operations at W.G.I.

As NASCAR officials walked around the track, which is more than 2 miles, they checked for big rocks, divots, and more.

“We’re looking where the cut outs are, where the safety equipment goes back into, how they can maneuver through the infield during a race back home in case you send them a different way,” said Tim Bermann, NASCARS’ director of Competition Operations. “It’s a total lay of the land very slow moving, which you’re not gonna get from a car.”

Mr. Bermnn added that if there are rainy condition, the races will continue. That’s as long as it isn’t a downpour, and no big puddles are on the track.
