The town bought the 105-acre Eaglecrest Golf Course in November for $8.5 million and has plans to carve out sections of the land for development.
Qualicum Beach is starting to sell off parts of a golf course it purchased last year for development.
The town has put up for sale 0.86 acres of land at the intersection of Eaglecrest Drive and Blind Bogey Drive, which form part of an unused section of the Eaglecrest Golf Course.
The town bought the 105-acre course in November for $8.5 million and has plans to carve out sections of the land for development up to five storeys tall.
The land for sale is currently subdivided into five lots, which could be used for single-family homes, duplexes or houseplexes, but the town says it is open to alternate designs that comply with current zoning regulations.
Interested parties have until June 5 to submit offers.
“This offering represents a unique opportunity to contribute to the growth of the Eaglecrest neighbourhood through thoughtful, low-scale housing options,” the township said in a statement.
The town is banking on land sale revenue to pay for the golf course purchase, which was opposed by the Eaglecrest Residents Association due to the density of the proposed developments.
A quarter of the golf course purchase costs was paid for by Christopher Foundation, a private foundation that offered to contribute, provided that its involvement was kept secret before the purchase was finalized and that 40 acres of the course would be kept as parkland.
About a tenth of the total 105-acre parcel is planned to be sold to developers, with the majority of the land located along Country Club Drive and the Island Highway, on the side of the Eaglecrest neighbourhood that’s closer to the highway.
The waterfront neighbourhood has its origins as a luxury resort and residence for Alexander Duncan McRae, an MP, senator and businessman who represented the riding of Vancouver North from 1926 to 1930.
