Texas A&M Women’s Tennis Reaches Seventh Straight Sweet 16

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (FOX 44) — If there is one constant each spring in college tennis, it is Texas A&M making a deep NCAA Tournament run.

The No. 3 Aggies advanced to the NCAA Tournament’s Sweet 16 for the seventh straight season and will host No. 13 Southern California on Friday in the Super Regional round in College Station.

Texas A&M opened postseason play with a 4-0 sweep of Quinnipiac before showing its resilience in a 4-1 victory over Baylor on Sunday. After dropping the doubles point, the Aggies responded by winning four singles matches to secure the comeback win and punch their ticket to the Sweet 16.

Last season, Texas A&M advanced to the NCAA championship match before falling to top seeded Georgia.

Head coach Mark Weaver said this year’s team has maintained the consistency that has defined the program in recent years.

“I spoke about that after the match. I think it’s seven Sweet 16 in a row and it’s not easy to do,” Weaver said. “I think a lot of people maybe take that for granted and very pleased with the consistency of our program. And, you know, a lot of the work we put in the season being able to host these first three rounds are very important. And yeah just pleased that, you know, we’ve had such an excellent season and it’ll be a tough one on Friday against USC.”

Senior Mia Kupres said the team understands the expectations that come with a high seed and deep postseason experience.

“Very excited. I mean, obviously, going into this tournament as a high seed, you kind of expect to be in this place,” Kupres said. “But you have to get all the first steps done first. So you have to go through every match. And we’re super excited for what’s to come. It’s only getting more and more fun.”
