The Montreal Victoire is one win away from eliminating the two-time defending champion Minnesota Frost in the opening round of the PWHL playoffs.
The Victoire snapped up a 2-1 victory over the Frost in Thursday’s Game 3 at St. Paul, Minn., to seize a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five game semifinal series.
The Frost took the lead in the first period on a goal by Sidney Morin before the Victoire’s Maggie Flaherty tied the game with a wraparound shot in the second. Less than 30 seconds later, Hayley Scamurra scored the game-winning goal.
Victoire goaltender Ann-Renée Desbiens made 27 saves in the win, while Minnesota’s Maddie Rooney turned aside 17 shots.
Montreal has reached the playoffs in each of its three seasons, but this marks the first time it’s held a series lead. With a win in Game 4 Friday (8:30 p.m., Prime) in St. Paul, the Victoire will head to its first Walter Cup final.
Game 5, if necessary, will take place at Place Bell in Laval on Monday at 7 p.m.
