Cardinal Newman boys soccer is pushed to the limit in a 1-0 victory in the SCISA 4A state championship

The Cardinals have won seven consecutive state titles, but Porter Gaud proved it has also has a program that is capable of playing at a high level.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — One goal was all it took for Cardinal Newman to win a seventh consecutive state championship, but that halftime lead was quite tenuous as Porter Gaud made a couple of adjustments which provided several close calls against the Cardinal defense.

But goalkeeper Ben Smoak pitched a shutout and the Jasper Westfall header in the first half was the difference as the Cardinals defeated Porter Gaud 1-0 to win the SCISA 4A state championship at St. Sebastian Stadium.

This is the 12th state title for head coach Will Eudy who in years past, has seen his team post comfortable margins of victory.
