MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – Cyclists from 40 universities across the country wrapped up the USA Cycling Collegiate Road National Championships in Madison on Sunday.
Cyclists raced in a loop outside Breese Stevens Field in the afternoon, with more than 350 athletes participating.

Organizers said the cyclists are the best collegiate riders in the United States, having qualified by participating in local conference races.
“We’re all doing the balance of athlete-student and competing for our teams,” Stephanie Lawrence, who won the collegiate varsity women’s championship, said. “It’s very unique and very fun, and then having a national championship especially right now when we’re all finishing up is extremely stressful but extremely rewarding.”
Both individual and team national championship titles were awarded, giving students and their schools multiple opportunities for achievement.
Many came out to watch the event, which cyclists say contributed to the energy of the competition.
“It was amazing,” Lawrence said. The whole race I could hear people cheering and screaming from the sidelines, so it just made the whole race a lot more fun.”
