Independent MLA Becky Druhan is set to join the Nova Scotia Liberal Party, CBC News has learned.
Multiple sources tell CBC that Druhan, the MLA for Lunenburg West, will make the announcement today in Bridgewater.
The party has called a news conference in the South Shore town for 11 a.m. AT to “share an important update on the future of the caucus,” according to a notice it sent out Sunday evening.
Druhan was first elected to the Nova Scotia legislature in 2021 as a Progressive Conservative, and served as education minister in Premier Tim Houston’s cabinet.
A lawyer by training, she went on to serve as justice minister and attorney general after the PCs were re-elected in 2024, until she left cabinet last October. A few days later, she left the PC caucus.
At the time, Druhan said her decision to leave the party was based on “a difference of principles” between her views and those of party leadership.
She later talked about contending with staff interference during debate in the legislature and coaching that recommended MLAs know who the enemy was in a story.
During the recent winter session of the legislature, Druhan and fellow Independent MLA Elizabeth Smith-McCrossin did much of the heavy lifting that extended debate and slowed the government’s ability to pass its budget, which contributed to increased public engagement in the process.
Last month, Druhan announced that she wanted input from her constituents about her political future, including whether she should continue sitting as an Independent MLA or explore joining a registered political party.
