Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are reminding drivers to double torque their tires after a loose tire sprung from a vehicle and severely injured a man driving along Highway 417 last week.
The tire came off a vehicle travelling eastbound and smashed through the windshield of a vehicle travelling westbound last Friday, according to an OPP post on X.
The man inside the damaged vehicle was taken to the hospital with injuries to his face and eyes caused by broken glass, an OPP spokesperson said.
“Motorists should make sure to have their tires double torqued,” an OPP spokesperson said via email. “Most mechanics recommend doing this 100 kilometers after changing your tires.”
The owner of the vehicle at fault has been charged under Ontario’s Highway Traffic Act. They face a minimum fine of $2,000 and will appear in provincial court at a later date.
