Surrey and White Rock students win VSO award

Fourteen students hit all the right notes for musical funding.
Surrey and White Rock high school students are the recipients of this year’s Höing Awards. The scholarships are awarded by the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra (VSO) School of Music.
The awards began in 2018 by longtime VSO supporters Werner and Helga Höing. According to Surrey Schools, they were created to recognize up to 20 Surrey students for “excellence in music, school leadership and community involvement.”
The winners are honored annually at the VSO’s spring concert at the Bell Performing Arts Centre. This year’s event took place on March 1.
Each student below earned $1,000 for their school’s music program:

• Ashley Erickson, Grandview Heights Secondary

• Hayden Hendricks, École Salish Secondary
• Nathan Anil Jacob, Frank Hurt Secondary
• Yusuf Jimenez, Johnston Heights Secondary
• Myra Kapoor, Enver Creek Secondary
• Hanna Lee, Fraser Heights Secondary
• Zoe Paez, Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary
• James Jiachen Yang, Elgin Park Secondary
• Zhanchang Zhang, Semiahmoo Secondary
