Free is your friend.
Especially if you need to rid your pad of junk.
The City of Surrey once again, until Sept. 30, is offering Surrey residents its Free Waste Drop-Off program, in which households can drop off up to 100 kilograms of junk at the Central Surrey and North Surrey recycling and waste centres.
“The Free Waste Drop-Off program is an important tool in our ongoing efforts to reduce illegal dumping in Surrey,” Mayor Brenda Locke stated in a press release. “By giving residents, a simple, no-cost way to dispose of unwanted items properly, we’re making it easier to do the right thing and helping keep our neighbourhoods clean and safe.”
It’s one free visit per household, with proof of Surrey residency, and includes large items – up to four mattresses, for example. If you bring more than 100 kilograms, you’ll have to pay regular fees for everything over that mark.
The Central Surrey Recycling and Waste Centre is located at 6711- 154 St. and the North Surrey Recycling and Waste Centre is at 9770 -192 St.
Commercial and business vehicles aren’t allowed. During these five months electronics, metal, appliances, books, and clothing are among items that can be dropped off.
Meantime, city hall also runs a free curbside pick-up service for stuff like furniture and mattresses, through the Large Item Pickup Program. This can been booked online at surrey.ca/largeitems or by calling 604-590-7289 (Option 3).
A corporate report to council indicates more than 23,000 residents participated in the 2025 free waste drop-off, ridding themselves of roughly 36,000 tonnes of refuse.
“This represented a significant increase in both participation and tonnage compared to previous events,” Scott Neuman, Surrey’s general manager of engineering, told council. “Resident feedback was overwhelmingly positive, and the increased collection of materials such as mattresses contributed to waste diversion and reduction in illegal dumping.”
Councillor Harry Bains said he still sees lots of garbage at the sides of roads.
“My message is this – you have no excuse you can dump up to 100 kilograms for free,” he said. “You can drop off up to four mattresses for free. There is literally no excuse to dump it up the street on the side of the road.
“Be responsible neighbours we all deserve it we all owe it to each other.”
Councillor Mandeep Nagra asked why businesses are excluded.
“I’m hoping we can eliminate this,” he said.
