Marking a milestone: Centennial Celebration planned for Ocean Park

One hundred years is no small milestone, and the Ocean Park Community Association isn’t about to let a century of community, connection and volunteer spirit quietly slide by.
A two-day Centennial Celebration is planned for June 5-6 to honour “two legacies at the heart of Ocean Park life” – the OCPA and the historic Ocean Park Hall, a news release issued Tuesday (May 12) announces.
“This celebration is about honouring what’s been built here over the last 100 years,” OPCA president Daisy Lifvenborg says in the release.
“Everything we’re celebrating – from the Ocean Park Hall itself to the events, programs, and small details throughout the village – has come from people showing up for their community. That spirit is what we’re really marking, and the essence of our mandate.”
The OCPA was founded in 1925, followed by the opening of Ocean Park Hall a year later – “a space built by the community, for the community, that continues to serve as a gathering place to this day,” the release states.
Next month’s centennial event is to open with a limited-capacity Heritage Trivia Night at the 1577 128 St. hall. On Saturday, there’ll be an early morning car show from 8-10 a.m., followed by a bevy of festivities from 11 a.m. till 3 p.m. – from carnival games and kids entertainment to heritage displays, a barbershop quartet, storytelling and a by-donation sale of retired street banners.
For those who want to do some exploring, a ‘Passport to the Village’ will offer participants a self-guided experience that includes clues to small moments of local history and trivia.
Passports may be picked up at the hall between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.; participating businesses will be dressed in blue and green centennial bunting.
The day is set to wrap up with dignitary remarks at 3 p.m. and a 7 p.m. concert at the hall featuring the Ocean Park Wailers.
Organizers have been preparing for the Centennial Celebration through “months” of community-building efforts spearheaded by the OPCA, the release notes, pointing to a fresh set of centennial street banners, a new heritage storyboard installation at the hall, refreshed village planters, and an updated Ocean Park map highlighting local history, hidden gems and fun facts about the area.
