The school district’s MMA and SEL program hosted its championship tournament on Tuesday.

SCRANTON, Pa. — A mentoring program in scranton is knocking kids off their feet.

The Scranton School District’s mixed martial arts and social-emotional learning program hosted its championship tournament at West Scranton Intermediate School on Tuesday night.

The program provides students with mentorship, physical fitness, self-discipline, and emotional resilience through MMA training and SEL activities.

Tuesday’s tournament showcased the progress and accomplishments of participating students throughout the program year.

“Just to see these kids come out and show the skill level and what they’ve learned all year, it’s phenomenal,” says James Simrell, Master Mentor, Scranton School District, MMA Program. “I’ve had guys who have trained with me and gone to college, and they said the determination that I’ve taught them through fighting has helped them so much through life, and that’s what I try to put into all my kids that I train.”

About 50 kids competed in the tournament in Scranton.
