Construction is ramping up on the new interchange at the Perimeter Highway and McGillvary Boulevard, and drivers are being warned to expect increased activity in the area in the coming weeks.
The interchange will include a four-lane divided highway and a two-lane undivided overpass, identified as the interim phase in the South Perimeter Highway Design Study to address current capacity, traffic volumes, safety concerns and projected growth.
In the next few weeks, drivers will see the installation of temporary traffic control measures, the establishment of material storage areas and office trailers, the construction of access points, the hauling of gravel, and earthmoving operations.
An Automated flagger assistance device will be used on PTH 3 to manage traffic through the area. This device is being used in place of traditional flagging operators to enhance safety by reducing direct exposure of workers to live traffic.
There are no major road closures or detours planned at this time. However, the province is encouraging motorists to expect reduced speed limits and heavy traffic.
They are also reminding drivers to slow down, remain alert and be prepared to stop.
The project is part of the Manitoba government’s Perimeter Freeway Initiative, a long-term plan to upgrade the Perimeter Highway (PTH 100) to freeway standards and improve safety and efficiency around Winnipeg.
