If you’re impatiently waiting for word on when Samsung’s first tri-fold smartphone might finally hit the market, you might not have to wait much longer — even if it means getting beat to the punch by the only other tri-foldable in town.
Leaker Ice Universe shared a rough timeline for 2025’s expected slate of tri-folds, both of which are headed towards early fall arrivals (via SammyGuru). The big news here is an October launch window for Samsung’s first tri-folding device, which — going off a Korean trademark registration — might be called the “Galaxy Z TriFold.” That window aligns with previous leaks from last month, though it’s worth noting other details from that report suggested an Unpacked tease in July and an August street date for Samsung’s other foldables, neither of which ended up being correct.
Still, October seems like the right spot for Samsung’s first “multi-fold” device, as it referred to back in January. Last year, the company launched the Galaxy Z Fold SE in October, a larger, slimmer device exclusive to China and South Korea. With the benefit of hindsight, it’s easy to see that device as a testing ground for many of the advancements seen in this year’s global Galaxy Z Fold 7 — the thinner chassis, the lack of a digitizer — a spot the tri-fold could fill this year. Considering rumors continue to swirl suggesting a similarly region-limited launch for the “Galaxy Z TriFold,” October seems like the perfect month for this sort of launch.
Unfortunately, it could end with Samsung getting lapped by its only tri-fold rival. Huawei launched the Mate X last fall, and while it’s far more of a curio than a real device thanks to its China-exclusive status, it was still one impressive piece of tech. Ice Universe says its successor is arriving in September, potentially beating Samsung’s first-gen tri-fold phone to market. While Samsung’s G-shaped structure should prove a little more usable — or, at least, protective — than Huawei’s map-esque display layout, it must sting the Korean smartphone maker just a bit to get lapped in this arena.
