A child sustained minor injuries after being struck by a vehicle in Castleridge Wednesday afternoon.
The child, who police estimate to be 3 or 4 years old, remained conscious, but was transported to the Alberta Children’s Hospital in serious but stable condition. Police later reported that the child’s injuries were minor.
Police believe the child got out of the family’s home along Castleridge Drive without the parents’ knowledge and ran into the street.
The driver remained on scene and is currently not facing charges. Police do not believe intoxication or speed was a factor.
Harpreet Badesha was driving behind the vehicle involved when the accident occurred.
“We were going about 35 kilometers per hour right behind him . . . and I just heard a loud thud,” he said. “The next second, the truck started slamming its brakes, and the kid rolled off the front fender. Then I just ran outside and went to support the child.”
A woman, who Badesha believed was a passenger in the truck and was reportedly a nurse, also ran to the child’s aid, as did the child’s mother, who Badesha thought might have been just outside or at the door to the home when the child was struck.
“The driver right away got out,” Badesha said. “(He) came to check for the kid, but I told him to call 911 right away.”

The nurse, he said, told him the child came out of nowhere. The incident occurred near the intersection of Castleridge Drive N.E. and Castlepark Road N.E. shortly before 4:30 p.m.
Fire trucks and EMS arrived within minutes and attended to the child, who had sustained multiple injuries.
“There was bleeding from the mouth and the nose. The nose seemed more like it was from a tear from the side, but the mouth looks like the jaw was out of place, maybe, possibly a couple of teeth,” Badesha said.
“A lot of blood was coming out. I felt around the head and spine area, didn’t feel like any cuts or fluids coming out. His (left) arm was bent the other way completely.”
At first, he said, the child’s breathing slowed, but the child “then started crying, trying to move around a lot, which was a good sign.”
“Overall, he seems like a strong kid,” he said.
