A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for a large area of the province, including Montreal, Quebec City, the Eastern Townships, the Lower St. Lawrence region northern Quebec.
This comes several days after Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) issued a heat warning, which is still in effect. The agency says it will likely be the last day of intense heat for the areas affected.Â
On Wednesday, ECCC said conditions are favourable for a potentially dangerous thunderstorm to develop in the afternoon or early evening. It says the storm could produce strong winds, large hail and heavy rain.
There’s also a slight risk for a tornado to form. Power outages are possible.
ECCC says to take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches. If outdoors, protect yourself from hair and flying debris.Â
“When thunder roars, go indoors! Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year,” writes ECCCÂ in the watch alert.Â
