Initially having arrived as rehab coach in 2022, Carmona remained in situ as a sport scientist during the 2023/24 campaign before two years as a fitness coach.

The Spaniard has worked under a series of head coaches in that time, most recently Tom Cleverley, Paulo Pezzolano, Javi Gracia and Ed Still.

He posted on Instagram: “I came here for something that was only supposed to be for 3 months…and you turned it into 4 years. The goal was simply to be there, but I never imagined that the way could matter so much.

“I’ve been lucky to work with great professionals, but above all, great people. And to those visits that made the winters a little easier… thank you.

“And to you, players — just remember that I always tried to do what was best for you, even when you didn’t like it.

“And like always, every morning, every training session, every match…I hope you remember me smiling.”

Carmona is evidently well-liked among the players, who commented below the post.
