A senior is in hospital in critical condition and a man was arrested after a vehicle-ramming incident in Vancouver’s West End Friday morning (May 15).
The incident was reported to police around 5:30 a.m. when a vehicle was allegedly driving erratically in the area of Comox and Broughton streets, hitting numerous objects, including the Nelson Park dog area. Vancouver police said that several people had to scramble to get out of the way of the suspect’s vehicle.
A senior, who was riding a motorized scooter at the time, was unable to get out of the way of the driver. They were taken to hospital with injuries where they remain in critical condition.
The suspect was eventually stopped after he rammed a police vehicle that was responding to the incident, destroying the police cruiser and flipping the suspect’s vehicle.
Police said the suspect was trapped inside the vehicle. Multiple ambulances and Vancouver Fire Rescue Services responded and they were able to free the suspect from the vehicle.
He was arrested near Comox and Bute streets.
Vancouver Police Department officers are also in hospital being treated for their injuries.
Police say mental health and substance-use issues may be possible factors in the incident.
The major crimes unit is investigating, but the “motive remains unclear at this time.”
